The iMac webcam works on Linux Draft

The goal

Get the iMac's built-in FaceTime HD camera working under Arch Linux. A homelab server with a working camera is a nice bonus — video calls, quick captures, whatever.

What broke and how it was fixed

Short one: the camera needed its firmware, which Apple doesn't ship in a Linux-friendly way. Installing facetimehd-firmware via yay pulled it in, and after that /dev/video* showed up and the camera was live.

No driver compilation, no kernel patches, no drama. Sometimes the fix really is one package.

Verdict

If your Apple camera is dark under Linux, check for /dev/video* first — if it's missing, you almost certainly just need the firmware package. One install, done.
